About UmmahAPI

A free Islamic API, built as sadaqah jariyah, so that anyone building for the ummah does not have to start from nothing.

Serving around 7 million API calls a month

What it is

UmmahAPI is a single free API covering the data most Islamic apps need. Quran text, translations, audio, and word by word data. Mushaf page layout for all 604 pages. Over 36,000 hadiths across ten collections. Tafsir, prayer times, qibla direction, the Hijri calendar, duas, the 99 Names, zakat calculation, and more.

There is no paywall and no authentication requirement. An API key raises your rate limit, but every endpoint works without one.

Why it is free

Building an Islamic app should not begin with three weeks of hunting down Quran text files of unknown provenance. This exists so that work is already done, and it is intended as sadaqah jariyah. It stays free.

Running costs are covered personally and, where possible, by sponsors. If the service is useful to your business, sponsoring it is the way to keep it available to everyone else.

Who builds it

UmmahAPI is built and maintained by Yousuf, a developer based in the United States. It is not a company, a charity, or a funded startup. It is one person keeping a service online because Muslim developers were repeatedly solving the same problem alone.

About the data

Quran text and hadith collections are drawn from established public sources. Prayer times are calculated with the widely used adhan library, supporting 23 calculation methods, both madhabs, and high latitude rules. Hijri conversion uses moment-hijri.

Care is taken to keep this accurate, but no automated service should be treated as a religious authority. For rulings, ask a scholar. If you spot an error in the data, please report it, because correctness here matters more than uptime.

Using it

Read the documentation, grab a free API key, or drop the embeddable widgets straight into a page. There are also free tools for people who just want prayer times or a qibla direction without writing any code.
